Frequently asked questions

Is tenant police verification mandatory in India?

There is no single national law. The duty comes from local orders issued by the Police Commissioner or District Magistrate (now under Section 163 of the BNSS, earlier Section 144 CrPC), usually for about 60 days and then renewed. Where such an order is in force, not informing the police is an offence under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (earlier Section 188 IPC). Some states, such as Kerala, say it is not mandatory. Check your city using the table above.

Who is responsible for tenant verification — the owner or the tenant?

The responsibility is usually on the owner or landlord (and on the PG operator for PG residents), though the tenant has to provide documents and sign the form.

What documents are needed for police verification of a tenant?

Typically: the tenant’s photo ID and permanent address proof, a recent passport photo, a copy of the rent or PG agreement, the owner’s ID and sometimes proof of ownership. Some forms also ask for workplace details and two references.

Can police verification be done online?

In many states, yes — through the state police citizen portal or app. Others still accept it only at the local police station. The state table on this page shows which is which.

Do PG owners have to verify every resident?

Where verification is required, it applies to PG and hostel residents as well as tenants, and some cities have separate PG registration rules. Doing it at every move-in is the safe practice.

Is the information I type saved anywhere?

No. The form is generated in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored.
